There are about 27 lakh Indians living in Saudi Arabia, which is the largest migrant community there. Most of these people work in low -paid jobs such as construction, domestic service and retail. Most of these migrants are unaware of the local laws, customs and judicial processes there. Sharia law applies in Saudi Arabia, which is quite different from the laws of Western countries. Small mistakes which can be considered normal in India can cause serious crime. A large number of Indians in jail in Saudi Arabia are mainly the result of a large migrant population, the harsh legal rules and the ignorance of the laws there.
Crime related to drugs and alcohol: Alcohol consumption, production or sales in Saudi Arabia are strictly banned. There may be punishment for death penalty for drugs related to drugs.
Economic Offenses: Not repaying debt or financial fraud is also a reason for going to jail.

Legal procedures and embassy role
Legal processes in Saudi Arabia are very strict and are often confidential. Local officials do not share information about prisoners without the prisoner’s consent. Indian embassy and consulates give priority to the safety and welfare of Indians closed abroad. They regularly visit jails, provide legal aid and contact local authorities to release prisoners. Many times efforts are made to release prisoners on human basis or through forgiveness petitions.
