The Ministry suspended WFI on 24 December 2023 due to a hasty announcement of the Under-15 and Under-20 National Championships.
The committee led by Sanjay Singh won the WFI election on December 21, 2023, but the government was angry with the selection of the site for the national championship in Nandini Nagar, Gonda, former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The ministry said in its order that WFI has taken corrective steps, so it has decided to remove the suspension.
In January 2023, a group of Olympians and international wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia and others, staged a sit -in by Brij Bhushan demanding dissolution of WFI due to alleged sexual harassment of women wrestlers. After which Brij Bhushan had to face suspension. Sanjay Singh, who was in his place, was made the president of WFI.
