The Khyber Pakhtunwa government described Imran Khan as the biggest name in Pakistan’s cricket history and has decided to change the name of the only international cricket stadium in the province to Imran Khan Cricket Stadium. In his order here, Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur has said that this proposal is in honor of Imran Khan’s remarkable contribution in the history of Pakistan and his important role in shaping the sports scenario of the country. Under this proposal, the name of Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium should be changed to Imran Khan Cricket Stadium Shahibag Peshawar.
Why this stadium is special
This stadium is included in the old stadium in Pakistan. One day international matches are held here. The teams of Australia, South Africa, India, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, West Indies and England have played cricket matches. Initially, the capacity of this stadium was to sit for only 5000 dashars. It was a small pavilion for local cricket matches. But later in 1986/87, the provincial government developed it. In 1996, India and Pakistan jointly hosted the World Cup here, and a lot of facilities were provided here by improving this stadium. Now more than 30 thousand spectators can sit here.
Shahbaz government can do politics
According to the order issued by the Chief Minister of the province, a reform scheme was approved in this stadium in April 2008 at a cost of Rs 1.37 billion. This scheme was revised on 4 April 2021 and its amount was increased to Rs 1.94 billion. The second amendment was approved on 6 September 2024. In this, its total cost was reduced to 2.31 billion rupees. At present, the central government of Pakistan can do politics on this move of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government. Efforts can be made to put Imran Khan guilty in corruption cases and make the province government stand in the dock.
