Indian basket ball captain Hari Dutt Kapri died
New Delhi: Hari Dutt Kapri, the legendary basketball player of his time and former captain of the Indian team, died at his residence here. He was 83 years old and breathed his last on Wednesday. Kapri is survived by his wife and two sons. He was cremated at Rameshwar Ghat on Thursday.
Kapri was born in the year 1942 in Chiriyakhan village of Muwani area of Pithoragarh district. He was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1969. Under his leadership, the Indian basketball team moved from seventh to fourth place in Asia in 1969. The Indian basketball team performed well under his captaincy from 1965 to 1978.

Kapri was also awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Uttarakhand government. Pithoragarh District Magistrate Vinod Goswami said, ‘He was an extraordinary player of basketball. He made the country proud by bringing the Indian team to fourth place in Asia due to his commitment to the game. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also mourned his death.
