Actually, the Kerala government has decided to start Zumba Dance Sessions in government schools from this year. This initiative has been started on the instructions of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in which Zumba is to be included as the necessary exercise. The government believes that this will reduce the mental stress of children and will prevent the growing intoxication among the youth. This dance-outsprise based on Zumba’s fun tunes is a modern way to keep children physically active.

However, a dispute has arisen in Kerala over this decision. Some radical Muslim organizations and cultural groups have opposed this initiative. They argue that boys and girls dancing together, their clothes and influence of foreign culture, is against our traditional values. Organizations have expressed displeasure over implementing it in schools, calling it “against moral values”. What is Zumba and where did it start?

Zumba is a high-energy fitness program, mixing dance steps with Latin and International Music. This is a workout that enjoys doing and it seems more entertaining than traditional exercises. Jumba’s choreography includes moves of various dance styles like Salsa, Merangue, Regaton, Hip-Hop, Samba and Bailey Dance.

It was started in the 1990s by a dancer and choreographer named Beto Perez of Columbia. Once he forgot to bring music tape in his aerobics class and used his personal Latin music. The class liked so much that it became a new concept. In 2001, he launched the Zumba Fitness LLC in the US with his two colleagues Alberto Pearlman and Alberto Aghion and became a global fitness brand on seeing this. The interesting thing is that the word “Zumba” has no special meaning. It was chosen just because it seems fun and fervor.

Benefits of Zumba

Zumba dance is an energy -rich exercise, which not only helps in weight loss but also improves heart health. It exercises almost every part of the body, which causes muscle toning. Doing stress reduces stress, improves mood and improves mental health as it activates dance form endorphin hormone. It is also a social activity that increases confidence and removes the feeling of loneliness. Calorie burns rapidly by doing 30–45 minutes daily, the body becomes flexible and activeness remains throughout the day.
