Highlights

  • This feature detects the earthquake using the phone’s sensor.
  • This feature of Google has reached more than 2.5 billion people.
  • AEA feature can detect earthquake on a large scale
Google launched the Android Earthquake Alert (AEA) system in the year 2020. This feature is especially for those who live in earthquake affected areas. This is very cheap and easier than the early warning system because it does not require separate session stations. This system is now available in 98 countries and has reached more than 2.5 billion people. This feature detects earthquake using smartphone sensors.

Recently, according to a study published in Science Journal, Google’s AEA system is as effective as tedsal network. Researchers said, “This system can detect earthquake on a large scale using smartphones spread worldwide and issue a warning.”

Although smartphone’s accelerometer sensors are not as sensitive as professional devices, they are adept at detecting ground movements during earthquake.

312 earthquake has been detected

Between 2021 and 2024, this system of Google has detected 312 earthquakes in 98 countries. The intensity of these earthquakes was between 1.9 to 7.8 magnitudes. According to the report, 85% of users who received alert also shared it. Of these, 36% of the people got alert before the earthquake, 28% during the earthquake and 23% after the earthquake started.

How does this system work?
According to Google, this system feels vibrating from the Accelerometer Sensor present in the smartphone. When a phone detects unusual vibrations, it sends data and location to Google’s server.
