New Delhi: Madhur Bhandarkar’s 2001 ‘Chandni Bar’ is considered one of his most memorable films and Tabu’s is also one of the best performance. Nobody expected the film to perform so well, but it not only achieved success in theaters, but it became a Calt film. In a recent interview, the filmmaker remembered the time when the film was released. He said that Mahesh Bhatt really woke him up and asked him to cherish this moment. However, the director took some time to realize that the film actually impressed the audience.
Madhur was not famous during the moonlight bar
He said in an interview with Komal Nahata on ‘Game Changers’,’ After Friday, I went to a theater in Kandivali and stood outside. Nobody knew me at that time. I saw that people were clinging to the screen. But I could not guess the response. Do they feel this bad? He was very serious. When they came out, I was asking him how the film is? Some said that it is good, but some did not talk at all. So I was again in tension.
Good news met Tabu
Tabu first called him and told him about this. He said, ‘Tabu had earlier called. He said, ‘Sir, look, you are burnt. The film has taken a very good opening. Many distributors also called me. In this way he accepted that the film has become a hit and he fell asleep. But then Mahesh Bhatt called him and asked him to cherish this moment.
There was a huge crowd to see Madhur’s film in theaters
Madhur said, ‘I remember that I was sleeping on a carpet under a fan on my 1 Babhk floor, then I did not even have AC. Mahesh Bhatt Saheb called me around 2 pm. I had met him 2-3 times before him. He asked me, ‘Madhur, where are you?’ I was feeling sleepy so I said that I am at home. He abused me and said, ‘You are crazy, foolish man. Your film is a blockbuster, this is such a big hit and you are sleeping. Go and see crowds outside theaters. You will not meet such milestones again and again. So I became very excited. I apologized to him and ran like the fire brigade had played an alarm.
Madhur could not read the faces of the audience
After this, the director visited Gaity Galaxy and Star City Theater in Mumbai and saw that the show was walking there. At that time no one recognized his face but the audience looked happy. He said, ‘I needed that incarnation talking. He said absolutely right, people want to watch such big hit films. You cannot watch such films every day.
