Every year on 31 May, World No Tobacco Day is celebrated so that people can be made aware of the dangers of tobacco. You will be surprised to know that about 5500 children in India start consuming tobacco. The trend of cigarette and e-cigarette is increasing in cities. Experts have described it as a “perfect store” for public health. Tobacco lung is the main cause of many diseases including cancer and heart disease. A large number of youth are falling prey to its addiction.

Nicotine is found in tobacco and by consuming it, the youth get addicted to it. About 40% of lung cancer cases are related to smoking or vepping, while in 20% of people, lung cancer cases are smokless tobacco products ie Khaini and Gutkha. About 20% of cases are due to long stay in air pollution. In non -smokers, there is a risk of cancer due to genetic.
According to Dr. Bahl, nowadays, not only men, but women are also smoking a lot. This is not only affecting the lungs, but reproductive health and hormonal balance is also deteriorating. Smoking increases the chances of premature menopause in women, which can occur 1 to 4 years in advance compared to women who do not smoke. Out of 100 women who eat tobacco or cigarettes, about 60–70% of women have problems related to periods. About 30–40% of women face reproductive problems, including difficulty in pregnancy or early menopause.
Dr. Manoj Goyal, Principal and Unit Head of Pulmanology Department of Gurugram Fortis told That waping is often offered as a safe option compared to cigarettes and bidis, but is equally dangerous. When both vepping and smoking are together, it increases the risk of lung cancer by several times. Nowadays pollution is also increasing in cities, especially the excess of PM2.5 particles has created a dangerous condition for respiratory diseases. In such a situation, every step taken towards tobacco-free life can be an important effort towards better health. People should distance away from tobacco and smoking, so that there are no respiratory problems and the risk of cancer can also be reduced. Women should also take special care of this.
