Interesting health facts: Sweating during the summer season and it is a natural process of the body. Sweating helps in controlling body temperature. Sweat is often associated with smell, but you will be surprised to know that there is no smile in sweat. Sweating is odorless and plays an important role in maintaining our body’s temperature. Now you must be wondering that if there is no smell in sweat, then why does the smell start to smell from sweat? Let’s know the reason.
Dr. Couple Rajput, Assistant Professor and Dermatologist of GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, UP, told News18 That our body contains apocrine glands, which releases sweat according to the need to control body temperature. These glands are more in the area of underarms, waist and hairy. When these glands cause sweat, then there is no stench. When the sweat is mixed with the bacteria on the skin, then it starts to smell. Skin bacteria together cause smell in sweat. However, apocrine glands are active only when they are adults, due to which the sweat of children does not smell.
The doctor said that some people struggle with a problem called hyperhydrosis and due to this they sweat more than normal, which increases the problem of smell. A major cause of smell due to sweat can also be our food and drink. Foods like spicy food, onion, garlic, brockley and red meat can also affect the smell of sweat. The sulfur compounds present in garlic and onion come out of the body with sweat and create a sharp smell with bacteria. Apart from this, excessive intake of caffeine and alcohol can also cause bad odor in sweat. So keep your food and drink balanced.
According to experts, excessive stress and anxiety also play an important role in increasing the smell of sweat. When we are stressed, the level of cortisol hormone in the body increases, which motivates the apocrine glands to produce excessive sweating. This sweat together with bacteria produces a strong smell. Apart from this, hormonal changes such as pregnancy, menopause or thyroid problem can also affect the amount and smell of sweat. If you feel that your sweat is abnormally smelly, it can also be a sign of diabetes, kidney disease or thyroid disease.
According to experts, the selection of clothes also affects the smell of sweat. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester and rayon are unable to absorb sweat, due to which the sweat remains on the skin and creates a favorable environment for bacteria. Natural clothes like cotton absorb sweat, which reduces the chances of smell. If you do not change clothes regularly or wear dirty clothes, bacterial gathering may increase, which makes the problem of smell more serious. Therefore it is necessary to maintain cleanliness.
Now the question is, what to do to avoid the smell of sweat? According to the doctor, by adding a few drops of lemon juice, rose water or tea tree oil in bath water, bacteria can be reduced and fresh fragrance can come from the body. Apart from this, bathing should be taken twice a day in summer and those parts of the body should be washed thoroughly, where sweat accumulates more. This can give relief from the smell of sweat. If the problem still persists, then consult a doctor.
