Shubman Gill and KL Rahul raised India from the initial tremors. Both performed brilliant passion and restraint and scored an unbeaten half -century. Due to which the visiting Team India scored 174 runs for 2 wickets till the stumps on the fourth day of the fourth Test match. Gill is at the crease after scoring 78 and Rahul 87 runs. Both of them shared an unwavering partnership of 174 runs for the third wicket and did not let any wickets fall in both the final sessions. India is now 137 runs behind England.
Thanks to the brilliant century of captain Ben Stokes (141 runs), England scored a score of 669 runs in the first innings in the morning to take a huge lead of 311 runs. After this, India had to bat for 20 minutes before lunch, in which its start in the second innings was disappointing.
India lost the wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal and B Sai Sudarshan on two consecutive balls in the first over, while the team’s account was not even open then. Due to this, the team’s score at lunch was two wickets on one run. Chris Woakes’s ‘Round the Wicket’ ball took the outer edge of Jaiswal’s bat and went into the hands of Joe in the first slip. In the dilemma of leaving the ball and playing on the next ball, Sudarshan was caught by Harry Brook in the second slip.
England fast bowlers took much more advantage than the pitch than Indians. But Gill and Rahul showed the best technology and continued to play with restraint and handled the Indian innings and tied the hope for the last day. Among the England fast bowlers, especially Joffra Archer threw some dangerous insignificance on Gill’s pad, but the Indian captain was successful in playing a brilliant shot by recovering from them.
Gill was supported by Rahul, who is always reliable, who has been the foundation of India’s batting in this series. Gill also joined luck during this time because when he was on 46 runs, Liam Dawson off Bridan Cars left his catch at the backward point.
Gill completed his half -century by playing some spectacular straight drive and cover drive. In the 17th over, he hit two consecutive fours off Archer’s ball, of which first drive and then an upper cut. He also hit a continuous fours off the cars, including a great on drive.
Rahul stopped the ball showing strong defense. His square cut and back cut were fantastic. England made several attempts in the final session and continued to bother the pair at the crease with short balls but both did not miss. England fast bowlers were getting a lot of movement in the air and outside the pitch. But with the sunshine, batting in the final session became easier.
Bumrah took two wickets for 112 runs from five maidens in 33 overs. For the first time in his unprecedented Test career, he gave 100 or more runs. Stokes (141 runs, 198 balls), playing ahead of 77 runs, started the day by moving ahead in Siraj’s ball and shotting in the cover area. He achieved a century and five wickets in this match by hitting a four in the leg side off Siraj’s ball.
Stokes has scored a century after two years, which matters a lot to him. When Stokes hit a six off the ball of Washington Sundar, he became the third cricketer to complete 7000 runs and 200 wickets after Jak Kallis and Sir Gary Sobers. Where England easily set a boundary, this was the first time since 2014 when India conceded 600 runs in an innings.
