The Federal government has said that social media companies will have to take “appropriate steps” to remove social media accounts of these minor users by December 10 and to prevent them from creating new accounts through age verification software. Under this law, children will not be given access to these social media platforms despite their parents permission.
Hot debate is going on across the country on the possible benefits and disadvantages of this decision. Some experts believe that through social media, youth express themselves, make their identity and feel social engagement. In a society where two out of every five children feel lonely, this connectivity can be very important. On the other hand, the fear of social media addiction and being deprived of its pleasure inspires children to spend excessive time on these platforms.
What should users do to do
1) Do not wait till 10 December Sudden distance from social media can be a shock for children. Therefore, parents should talk to children on this subject from now on. Tell them why this ban is being imposed and what effect will it have on their life.
3) Give options instead of removing- Group activities, group sports, creative interests like art, music, handicraft or volunteer work can be included as a social media alternative. This will provide children opportunities to express their social connections and express their identity.
5) Present the example – Children learn by looking at their parents’ behavior. Parents should also limit screen time, prioritize face-to-face relationships and join offline activities regularly. Experts believe that this ban may be an opportunity for children to learn balance between digital life and real life. Although it will not be easy to implement, but its effects can be reduced by preparing in advance.
