83 -year -old Padmashri Lama, who lives in Padam, is known as Dasharatha Manjhi of Chhonjor Ladakh. It was from his initiative that the foundation of this all Weather route was laid.

It used to take 5-6 days from Padam to Manali. Children’s higher study was a problem for the sick. I decided to build a road from Shinkula to Karjak village. People used to say what the government could not do, what would this Lama be able to do? But with his earnings, cut the inaccessible mountains and built a 38 km long road.

To cut the mountains, selling your house and land and bought machines for 57 lakh rupees. Also, Tipper, JCB machine and 5 mules also had to be purchased. 2 operators hired. I also worked for 24-24 hours to build the road. It took 4 years, but about 30 villages nearby got connectivity. Now the new path for Leh is open due to this road.
