Yes, in the year 2023, one of the country’s largest telecom service provider companies, Airtel’s National Nodal Officer lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police that its signal transmission was being disturbed at many places in the capital. Investigation revealed that remote radio units (RRUs) and base band units (BBU) were being stolen, which are priced at crores.

According to a report of the Indian Express, a senior police officer, who is involved in the investigation, said that this device is an important part of mobile towers BBUS. BBUS receives mobile users signal through antenna, which transfer the signal to RRUs to process data services like voice calls and internet.

Between 2023 and 2025, 7,000 RRUs of Airtel towers from Delhi-NCR, priced at Rs 350 crore, were stolen. Airtel was receiving complaints of service interruptions repeatedly.

A police officer said that when an Rru is stolen, it takes about a day to restore new parts and restore general services. The whole day, the entire area served by the tower, has trouble.

A team from the Inter-State Sale of Crime Branch, led by Inspector Shivraj Singh, was formed to investigate the big theft FIR. This team exposed an inter state racket.

Officials involved in the investigation said that most of the stolen Rru and BBU trans the Yamuna region were being sold in the black market. After this, they were smuggled out of the country. A police officer said that these tools were stolen from areas ranging from trans Yamuna areas like Seelampur, Shahdara, Jaitpur to Palam, Delhi Cantonment.

Three people are involved in the theft process of this tools. A person climbs the tower and separates the component. Then he comes down, where the other person is waiting on the bike. The person takes Rru to a third person, who stands a few kilometers away and then he sells it in the black market.

A mobile tower has four Rru, a policeman told, whose price is about Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. Every time thieves target a tower, the company suffers a direct loss of Rs 20 lakh.
