New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken tough steps against online fraud, which was being seen for a long time. Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Anil Kumar Lahoti has informed that the telecom companies are going to use the ‘1600’ number series. Therefore, if you get a call from a number that starts from 1600, then you can understand that this call is coming from legitimate banking, financial services and insurance companies. In a conversation with ET Telecom, Anil Kumar Lahoti reported that the series has been specially launched for transactions and service calls from banking, financial and insurance sectors.

With this initiative, it will no longer be possible for fraudsters to call themselves an employee of a bank or insurance company. As a result, it will be easy for people to understand which calls are important and who can be ignored.

Cases of fraud will be reduced
Experts believe that the commencement of this number series will reduce fraud cases because no citizen will respond to the calls that do not start from 1600. Apart from this, even if a call is raised, the fraudsters will not be able to tell themselves as a bank or insurance company employee and will not be able to cheat in this way.

According to Lahoti, telecom companies have been allotted a series of 1600 numbers. Banking, financial and insurance companies are being given to use it. TRAI has also advised the regulatory organizations monitoring the region to encourage their subordinate companies to adopt this system as soon as possible. It is noteworthy that some BFSI companies have already started using this series. SBI card is one of the first companies that have started using this series. With the help of this series, people will be able to easily identify reliable and safe calls.

In 2022, a joint committee was formed under TRAI. It included RBI, SEBI, Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and Telecom Department (DOT). This committee decided to create a system for banking, financial and insurance sector, so that fraudulent calls done using telecom resources could be banned. As the use of this system increases, it will be easier for everyone to identify the necessary calls coming from banking and insurance sectors.
