On seeing Madhubala at first sight, Dilip Kumar’s heart started beating. The two first met on the set of the film ‘Tarana’ in the year 1951, but the beginning of this love story was as beautiful, the end it was to the end.
On the set of ‘Tarana’, both of them started liking each other. They may like each other, but Dilip Kumar did not want to bind in any kind of relationship. The interesting turn in this love story came when the couple worked together in ‘Mughal-e-Azam’. In the film, Dilip Kumar played the lead role of Salim and Madhubala was seen in the role of Anarkali. Soon the onscreen romance of both of them started getting into their personal life too and this chemistry could not hide from the eyes of Asif, the director of Mughal-e-Azam.
Dilip Kumar mentioned the relationship with Madhubala
Dilip Kumar has mentioned his relationship with Madhubala in his autobiography ‘The Substance and the Shadow’ and K Asif’s interference in his relationship. In his book, Dilip Kumar wrote that the announcement of Mughal-e-Azam was also in discussion because people knew about him and Madhubala’s offscreen chemistry and were very excited to see both of them together on screen.
K Asif got a glimpse of Dilip Kumar-Madhubala’s relationship
According to the autobiography of the late actor, director K Asif also advised Madhubala to carry forward the relationship with Dilip Kumar. According to Dilip Kumar, K Asif started interfering in his relationship and would give strange advice to Madhubala to draw the attention of the actor. In the book ‘The Substance and the Shadow’, he wrote, ‘K Asif had taken up the task of advancing our relationship. He gives strange advice to Madhubala to tie me in a relationship ‘.
Director advised Madhubala to make physical relation
He further writes that K Asif had advised Madhubala to make a physical relationship with him to bring a dignity of a dignified and the solid Pathan of principles like him. However, according to Dilip Kumar, Asif’s advice had no effect on him. Dilip Kumar was also angry as soon as he came to know about this.
Eventually the couple’s relationship broke up. Even before the release of Mughal-e-Azam, Dilip Kumar and Madhubala’s relationship got soured and they separated their paths with bitterness for each other.
