New Delhi. India is set to host the Chennai Open WTA 250 tournament after a three -year gap, the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA) announced on Monday. The tournament will start from 27 October. The tournament last appeared on the WTA calendar in 2022, when the Czech Republic’s Linda Fruhwirtova won the singles title.
Chennai Open is an important tournament in the history of women’s tennis in India, which started in September 2022 as a WTA 250 tournament. This was the first WTA-level event in India after 2008. The tournament was held at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Nungambakkam, Chennai, which was part of a one -year WTA license due to cancellation in China.
The event included 32-Khiladi singles draws, 16-tim doubles draws, and about $ 2,50,000 prize money, under the leadership of TNTA President and tennis legend Vijay Amritraj, with strong support from the Tamil Nadu government. The tournament received local support, fans returned to the stadium and woke up the passion for Chennai’s tennis.
