On Tuesday morning, 9 convicts were brought to court amid heavy police security.

The Coimbatore Women’s Court on Tuesday sentenced 9 people to life imprisonment till the death of Tamil Nadu’s Polachi sexual harassment case. The court convicted everyone this morning. Judge R Nandini Devi found him guilty of gangrape and repeated rapes.

The court has ordered a total compensation of a total of Rs 85 lakh to the victim women. Many women sexually abused many women during 2016 to 2018. Among the victims were college students and married women.

The culprits made videos of sexual abuse. Blackmailing through him, raped women several times and also asked for money. The accused were suspected of sexually assaulting more than 50 women, but only 8 of them testified against them.

Among the convicts are Sabarirajan alias Rishawant (32 years), Thirunnavukarasu (34 years), T Vasant Kumar (30 years), M Satish (33 years, R Mani alias Manivannan, P Babu (33 years), Haron Paul (32 years), Arunnam (39 years) and Arun Kumar (33 years).

Nine people have been kept in Salem Central Jail since the arrest in 2019.

Case came up after rape of a student in a moving car The case came to light for the first time on February 24, 2019 when a 19 -year -old student lodged a police complaint. He alleged that on 12 February, four people raped her in a moving car near Pollachi.

He made a video of this, looted his gold chain and left him in a deserted place. The girl told her family when the accused threatened to leak the video and demanded her to have sex. The student was the first victim to speak against the culprits.

Following the complaint of the student, all the youths were arrested in 2019. Since then all Salem is lodged in Central Jail. A case of criminal conspiracy, sexual harassment, rape, gangrape and forced recovery was registered against the youth.

Videos of many women were found from the phone-laptop of the youth The police had investigated the mobile phones and laptops of the accused. In these, many video clips of the victims were found, which the youth had sexually harassed at different places. Most of these incidents took place at the farmhouse of Thirunavukkararu, a convict in Chinnappalayam near Polachi.

The case was initially investigated by the local police. It was later handed over to the Crime Branch-CID. However, amid the outrage across the state over the incident, the then AIADMK government transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The agency started investigating the case from 25 April 2019.

The culprits demanded softness in sentence During the CBI investigation, a pattern of sexual abuse with women in a systematic manner was exposed. The victims alleged that the accused had threatened that if they refused to obey them, they would leaked their video families and relatives.

Surendra Mohan, Special Public Prosecutor of CBI, said that the culprits had demanded softening in the sentence citing their young age and elderly parents. However, the agency demanded a minimum sentence of life imprisonment for the accused. The CBI also sought compensation for the victim women.

Surendra Mohan said that a total of 48 witnesses were questioned during the investigation. None of them reversed their statement. More than 200 documents and 400 digital evidence were presented in the court, including forensic investigation videos.
