Please tell that SIT was formed after getting bail in the case of Ashoka University Professor. Due to which the Supreme Court has also sought SIT investigation report. The Supreme Court has also asked to give information about the response on the NHRC notice on the FIR against Ali Mohammed.

During the hearing, the Haryana government informed the Supreme Court that a special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to investigate the case and Professor Ali Khan is cooperating in the Mahmudabad investigation. The Supreme Court sought a report of the investigation from SIT and clarified that the scope of investigation would be limited to two FIRs.

Extension in interim bail, not banning expression

The Supreme Court extended the interim bail period given to the professor and said he could write and speak. However, the court added the condition that they could not post anything online on cases related to investigation. The court clarified that there is no restriction on their freedom of general expression.

Controversy started from ‘Operation Sindoor’ post

The whole matter began when Professor Mahmudabad posted a Facebook related to ‘Operation Sindoor’, in which they praised the Indian Army’s restrained action, but questioned the war frenzy and symbolic patriotism. This post was lodged by Haryana Women’s Commission chairman and BJP youth leader Yogesh Jathadi, considering it objectionable.

  • Professor commented on Operation Sindoor: Complaint lodged to the police and Haryana Women’s Commission Chairman Renu Bhatia alleged that on 7 May 2025, Professor Ali Khan of Ashoka University located in Rai Education City of Sonepat made some comments regarding Operation Sindoor on various public forums including social media. Ali Khan had said objectionable things about 2 women military officers Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh who held the press briefing of Operation Sindoor against Pakistan.
  • 2 FIRs were lodged on the professor: After this, 2 FIRs were registered against the professor. DCP Narendra Singh of Sonepat said that the first FIR against Professor Ali Khan was on the complaint of the sarpanch of Jathedi village at Rai police station. At the same time, the second FIR was registered on the complaint of Renu Bhatia, chairperson of the Women’s Commission.
  • Professor was taken on 2 days police remand: After this, Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad has been arrested by the Sonipat police from Greater Kailash in Delhi. On Sunday night, he was produced in court and taken on 2 days police remand. He was produced in court on 20 May after the remand ended. From here he was sent to judicial custody for 7 days.

Now the next hearing of this case is to be held in July, where the Supreme Court will see whether the SIT investigation was fair and limited.
