When Satyajit Ray calls Sharmila
Sharmila Tagore, recalling the early days of the film, said that she was shooting for ‘Aradhana’ with Rajesh Khanna in those days. Then he received a call from Satyajit Ray. Recalling the conversation with her, the veteran actress told The Hollywood Reporter India, ‘She said,’ Will you work in my film? I need your one month time… in the month of May. Without thinking I said yes. Then when I kept the phone, I said, ‘Oh God, I have committed Shakti Samanta, because
He was making the ‘queen of my dream’ in the same May. ‘
Even after commitments, Satyajit Ray could not refuse
He further said, ‘Rajesh Khanna was very busy because he had won a talent contest and had committed with 12 manufacturers. So they had to give dates to everyone and they were all making films. His dates were very valuable. I said, ‘Shakti ji, I have to do this film. Somehow I interacted and came to Satyajit Ray and then went back to another film. Sharmila Tagore, who started her acting with Satyajit Ray’s ‘Apur Sansar’ (The World of Apu), could not say the filmmaker. The actress told that I always saw her with a little respect, like you do towards your father.
This film came in 1970.
Sharmila Tagore stayed in the watchman’s room
The 80-year-old legend actress further said, ‘When we were shooting for the film, we were all living in different places because there was a shortage of space. Simi Grewal, Kaberi Bose stayed in a bungalow in the neighborhood village. Satyajit Ray and Soumitra Chatterjee stayed at different places. I, Samit nephew, Subhendu Chatterjee, Rabi Ghosh stayed in another place. I stayed in the watchman’s room. There was a water cooler there. It was very hot at that time. You cannot even imagine how much heat was there. We used to shoot only from 5.30 am to 9 am and from 3 pm to 6 pm in the evening. The rest of the time we were just making bonds. We became good friends. It was a very difficult place.
Why did you want to shoot filmmakers in May itself
Why the filmmaker chose the month of May, Sharmila also told the reason behind this. He said, ‘He wanted that time. He wanted a special look and it was possible only in May because soon after that rain would come and everything would become green before that. “
