Blood Cancer Cases in Young age: Once upon a time, it was believed that the risk of cancer is more to the elderly, but nowadays the youth are falling prey to these deadly diseases. You will be surprised to know that every year more than 3000 young patients of Acute Meloid Lukemia (AML) are coming out in the capital Delhi. AML is an aggressive blood cancer, which is not treated at the right time, then death can occur. Doctors say that now this disease is growing rapidly in youth between 30 and 40 years of age, which is a sign of a serious crisis. Awareness about this disease is necessary.
According to toi report Increasing cases of blood cancer in youth are worrisome, but even more scared that only 30% of patients suffering from AML cancer are able to complete their treatment. The reason for this is expensive treatment and lack of facilities. According to doctors, India has neither enough awareness about this cancer nor is there easily treatment facilities. This is the reason that it has become very challenging to identify and treat this type of cancer in time. Because of this, all the youth are losing their lives.
According to Dr. Ranjit Kumar Sahu, Additional Professor in the Department of Medical Oncology of AIIMS Symptoms of AML cancer are very common, due to which people do not recognize it. Actually, when suffering from this blood cancer, the youth see symptoms like fatigue or infection, due to which people ignore and cancer is detected late. A normal blood test can identify this cancer, but for treatment, the patient has to go to the teaching center, where treatment is very expensive. If this cancer is not detected at the right time, then it reaches the advance stage and the chances of treatment are reduced.
Experts believe that people who have faced chemotherapy or radiation earlier are more at risk of developing AML. In such patients, this cancer can emerge as a secondary malegnancy. Patients are divided into ‘fit’ and ‘unfit’ categories based on their condition. ‘Fit’ patients need stem cell transplant, which is possible in about 50% of cases.
BLK Super Specialty Hospital’s Hemeto-Eunkology and BMT Department Vice-Chairman Dr. Dharma Chaudhary According to There is also a shortage of integrated treatment system for this serious disease in a city like Delhi. There is no standard diagnostic process for AML in government hospitals. This worsens the patient’s condition before starting treatment. To save lives from this cancer, the identity of timely symptoms, genetic examination and availability of targeted therapy are very important.
Globally, genetic testing and targeted medicine have improved the treatment of AML, but these facilities in India are still limited. Targeted medicines are expensive and have not been included in the national health schemes or cancer drug registry. Due to this, 15-20% of patients die in the first 30 days of the onset of treatment in India. Experts believe that if patients start treatment at an early stage without infection, their chances of survival are much more. Therefore, India will have to develop better and accessible treatment system as soon as possible.
