New Delhi. The friendship between Bollywood veteran actor Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor is not of their cinema world, but from childhood. This friendship, which started with football matches played in the streets of Peshawar, remained together till the cinema screen. While producer-director and veteran actor Raj Kapoor was known in the industry by the name of ‘Showman’, Dilip Kumar was known as ‘Tragedy King’. Raj Kapoor was the one who inspired Dilip Saheb to act. In an interview, Dileep told this story.

In an old interview given to Lehren Retro, Dilip Kumar brought back memories about this special relationship. Both did not do too many films together, but friendship was no less than the pair of ‘Jai-Viru’.

‘You go to films, we will go to both films’

Recalling his friend, Dilip Kumar had told, ‘We were from the same city. I was born in Peshawar, his (Raj Kapoor) was also there. Our families knew each other. When we used to play football, he used to be a good goalkeeper and referee, especially when we played against the British Army teams. He always used to say, ‘Go to films, we will go to both films.’ But I used to refuse because the dream of getting into films at that time was not common. I used to tell them, ‘You go, your father (Prithviraj Kapoor) is also in this field, you should walk on their steps.’

Their friendship in real life was deep and true. There was a lot of laughter between the two. Photo courtesy- redit

‘I said neither you will come here…’

Years later, when he (Dilip Kumar) first went on a film set, Raj Kapoor recognized him. Recalling Dilip Kumar said, ‘He (Raj Kapoor) said,’ I said neither you will come here! ‘ He said that our relationship was very beautiful.

Only 1 film together
