Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday appreciated the Election Commission’s decision to share voter list figures for Haryana and Maharashtra from 2009 to 2024. Rahul asked whether the Election Commission could announce the exact date for handing over data in digital format.
Rahul asked this question through a post. He also shared a screenshot of a media report published on 7 June, claiming that the Election Commission has cleared the way to share voter list data for Haryana and Maharashtra from 2009 to 2024 after assurances to the Delhi High Court in early 2025.
However, no official statement has been received by the Election Commission yet. Rahul Gandhi on Saturday sought an answer from the Election Commission, alleging rigging in the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections through an article in two daily newspapers of the country. Sources in the Commission said on Sunday that he would answer only when Rahul would write a letter to him.
Rahul Gandhi had said in his article in newspapers that- ‘match fixing’ was done in the Maharashtra assembly elections, in which the BJP was already tried to decide. The BJP and its allies had planned 5 steps to win the election.
Rahul also said that like Maharashtra, match fixing will be in Bihar next time, then in any state where the BJP is seen losing. However, the Election Commission termed Rahul’s claims as baseless and said that it is absurd to make such allegations after not coming in favor.
After this, Rahul also questioned the way the Election Commission responds. Rahul posted on X on Saturday night and wrote, ‘AAP (Election Commission) is a constitutional body. The method of answering serious questions by issuing notes and evasive notes is not correct. If you have nothing to hide, then answer the questions given in my article and prove it.
Rahul said- poison for match fixing democracy in elections
- ‘It is not difficult to understand why the BJP was in such a furore in Maharashtra, but rigging is like match fixing. The team that cheats may win, but it weakens institutions. The trust of the public on the election ends. Every responsible Indian should look at these evidences and ask questions. Match fixing in elections is poison for any democracy.
- ‘I am not talking about any small electoral disturbances, but I am talking about such rigging which was done on a large scale and in which the efforts of the country’s important institutions were tried.’
- ‘A Union Minister was placed in place of CJI in the committee appointing Election Commissioners through Election Commissioner Appointment Act. This ended the fairness and the entire control went into the hands of the government. It is not right to remove the Chief Justice and bring the cabinet minister. Think, why would someone remove a fair person and bring his man? The answer is found automatically. ‘
What Election Commission said on Rahul’s allegations, 3 points In
- When someone spreads such misinformation, it leads to the infamy of thousands of delegates whom political parties deploy during the election. The enthusiasm of millions of election workers is less, who perform the election duty day and night without tired.
- The whole country knows that government employees do the entire process of each election including preparing voter list, voting and counting. That too in the presence of representatives appointed by political parties/candidates from polling station to constituency.
- Then after the decision not coming in favor of the election, trying to discredit the Election Commission by saying this is completely absurd.
Maharashtra CM said- Rahul is giving false assurance to himself Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s allegations regarding the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections. He said, ‘Rahul Gandhi has accepted his defeat in Bihar. Until he lands on the ground, his party cannot win until he does not understand the facts. He has insulted the voters of Maharashtra with his words.
Shinde said, Congress is trying to spread a false negativity Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said, ‘When Mahavikas Aghadi performed well in Maharashtra in the Lok Sabha elections, Rahul did not say anything. At that time EVM and Election Commission were correct. Now they are trying to spread a false nectar. ‘
Mahayuti government was formed in Maharashtra on 23 November 2024 The results of the Maharashtra assembly elections came on 23 November last year. Mahayuti won 230 seats. After the Maharashtra elections, Rahul has been constantly accusing the BJP and the Election Commission. The Election Commission has responded several times to Rahul’s allegations. In April, the Election Commission had said- According to the law, the voter list is revised just before the election or once a year. The final copy of the voter list is given to all parties including the Congress.
