This bill tries to ban online games in which money or any valuable item is speculated. In addition, it also prohibits promotional materials, in which advertisements promoting money based gaming have been banned. Apart from this, banks and financial institutions have also been prevented from processing transactions related to these games. There is a provision of strict punishment for violating this law, including a fine ranging from ₹ 50 lakh to ₹ 2 crore, jails ranging from three years and the possibility of closing the guilty gaming platforms in serious cases.
While presenting the bill, Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav described online money gaming as a growing public health concern. He said that many families have faced serious financial crisis due to these sports. The minister insisted that online money gaming promotes drug addiction, which often leads to fraud and financial fraud and is a serious challenge for the society.
He said that estimated 45 crore people lose around Rs 20,000 crore annually through online gaming. Vaishnav also explained that the bill divides online gaming into three categories: e-Sports, Online Social Games and Online Money Games. The aim of the government is to actively promote e-sport and social gaming, while controlling money-based gaming.
