Search for immune ‘center’ that damaged joints

The team of Kyoto University has found that peripheral helper T cells (TPH cells), which play an important role in arthritis, are present in two forms: Stem-Like TPH cells: These cells live in the joints, which are called ‘immune hubs’, which is called torrential lymphoid structure. Here they increase their number and activate B cells.

Effator TPH Cells: Some of the stem-lic TPH cells are converted into Effector TPH cells. They produce inflammation by coming out of the hub. This is the reason that in many patients, inflammation persists despite treatment.

In an online published paper in the magazine of Science Immunology, the team said that better treatment can be possible if TPH cells like these stem are made in the beginning. This can improve patients for a long time and improve the quality of life.

Research also found that TPH cells like stem can make themselves new again and again and can also turn into Efferctor TPH cells. That is, they can be the root of the disease. Overall, this study revealed the presence of two types of TPH cells in tissues of swollen joints which have different roles. This discovery has brought new hope for arthritis patients.
