Police arrested a man on charges of firing on security personnel in a demonstration on 9 June in Manipur. Police said on Wednesday that Bino Pangijam (39 years), a member of a Maetai Group, was arrested on Tuesday. He is a member of the Arambai Teengol (AT).
Some other protesters, including Binao, had fled by firing on security personnel trying to open road jams in Imphal West district. The magistrate has sent him to eight days police custody. Apart from this, 19 other people have also been detained on charges of violence in Imphal Eastern district.
Violence erupted in the state after the arrest of Maetai leader Ashm Kanan Singh on 7 June. Trains were burnt in many areas of Imphal, tires and old furniture were also burnt on the roads. Apart from clash with the police, protesters also tried to burn themselves by putting petrol.
On May 3, 2023, more than 300 people have died in ethnic violence between Kuki-Matei. More than 1500 were injured. More than 70 thousand people have become homeless. More than 6 thousand FIRs have been registered in violence cases.

Demonstration continues for the release of Arambai Teengol leader
Maetai leader Ashm Kanan Singh was arrested by CBI. He was the head constable in the Manipur Police. He was suspended in March due to involvement in criminal activities. He was a member of AT and smuggled weapons across the border while in police.
Kanan was first suspended in gun smuggling in 2020. An FIR was lodged against him on 27 February 2024. Was suspended on 3 March 2025. Kanan is also the main accused in the attack of Additional SP Amit. Amit was kidnapped and assaulted.
The CBI arrested on June 7 on the basis of concrete evidence after several months of investigation. Since then, demonstrations are still being held in Manipur to demand the release of Kanan and four others. Due to this, there have been clashes with security forces in many districts of Imphal Valley.

The population of Naga-Kuki is around 34 percent. These people live in about 90% of the state’s areas.

The community argued that Manipur was merged with India in 1949. Before that he had the status of tribe. After this, the High Court recommended the state government to include Maetai in the Scheduled Tribes (ST).

- Why are Naga-Kuki in opposition: The remaining two tribes are against giving reservation to the Maetai community. They say that 40 out of 60 assembly seats in the state are already in the Maetai -dominated Imphal Valley. In such a situation, there will be a distribution of their rights due to reservation for Maetai in the ST category.
