Why did India ban Tiktok?
In June 2020, the central government issued a notification and decided to block 59 apps. The government said that adequate information is available against these apps which proves that it is included in India’s sovereignty and integrity, defense of India, security of the state and harmful activities for public system.
This list included apps like Tiktok, Shareit, Kwai, UC Browser, UC News, Vigo Video, Baidu Map, Clash of Kings and Du Battery Saver.
Incidentally, this development has happened at a time when relations between India and China are improving, especially since US President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on both countries. Recently, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited India and expressed strong support for Beijing for New Delhi against Trump’s tariff.
Wang met National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, Foreign Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also invited Prime Minister Modi to Chinese President Xi Jinping for the SCO summit to be held on 31 August – 1 September. The Chinese Ambassador to India also supported India on Thursday and said that both Asian neighbors are ready for “new chapters of dragon and elephant”.
