India’s first prototype fast breeder reactor (PFBR) is expected to begin next year at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. This reactor will start the second phase of the country’s three-phase nuclear projects, which aims to recycle nuclear vest and generate electricity. The reactor was designed by the Indira Gandhi Atomic Research Center (IGCAR).

The Government of India approved the Nuclear Electricity Corporation Limited (Bhavini) in 2003 for the construction and operation of the Nuclear Reactor-Pototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR).

This is the first reactor in India that will use plutonium-based fuel (mixed oxide) and use liquid sodium to keep it cool. The fuel from the Permorized Heavy Water Reactors (Phwr) being used in it will also be used again.

Will start making electricity by 2025-26

While Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is running the rest of the nuclear plants in the country, PFBR is preparing Bhavini. The capacity of this reactor is 500 mw and it is in its final stages. It is expected that it will start making electricity by 2025-26.

In March 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the control room of this reactor vault and the reactor. In July 2024, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) allowed fuel loading and initial tests.

PFBR will play a very important role in India’s nuclear project as the fuel out of the third stage thorium-based reactors will be used.

The government has also announced the ‘Nuclear Energy Mission’, which aims to be aimed at 100 GW from electricity.

At present, India’s nuclear capacity is 8.18 GW. Apart from this, 7.30 GW projects are in construction and 7.00 GW projects have been approved. All these together will increase India’s nuclear capacity to 22.48 GW by 2031-32.

After this, NPCIL will add 15.40 GW, light water reactors 17.60 GW, and 3.80 GW electricity from Bhavini PFBR. Also, small nuclear reactors and new technology reactors being created in collaboration with private sector will also contribute to it. Total The capacity will be 55 GW.

Three phases of electricity from PFBR

First step: Pressive heavy water reactors (Phwr) are being installed in it. They use natural uranium as fuel and heavy water is used to cool and slow down. Electricity is started in this phase.

Second phase: Fast breeder reactors (FBRs) are made in it. These reactor re -use the wasted fuel in the first phase and make plutonium. Its purpose is to prepare a large amount of fuel, so that it can be used further.

third step: Thorium will be used in this phase, which is found in large quantities in our country. Thorium cannot be used directly, so it is first replaced in uranium-233. Advance Heavy Water Reactors for this (AHWR, Will be made. This phase is very important towards making India self -sufficient in nuclear energy.

The purpose of this three-step scheme is to make maximum electricity from nuclear energy using the available uranium and thorium available in the country.
