The name was-Shivnath Singh. Even after 47 years, no Indian runner has touched the national record in the marathon.

Shivnath Singh was born on 11 July 1946 in Majharia village of Buxar district of Bihar. In his honor, every year, July 11 is celebrated as National Runners Day. History created in 1978

Shivnath Singh completed 42.195 km in the international marathon in Jalandhar in 1978 in just 2 hours 12 minutes. Surprisingly, his record is unwavering in 2025 today. 47 years have passed, but no Indian runner could reach that record.

Marathon used to run barefoot

Shivnath Singh had another special thing. He used to run without shoes even at big international events. People were surprised to see his passion. He also represented India at the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics. In this, he secured 11th position. However, he could not qualify for the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Indian Army carved and gave opportunities

Like Milkha Singh and Paan Singh Tomar, Shivnath Singh was also a soldier of the Indian Army. He joined Bihar Regiment and reached the post of Naib Subedar. The Indian Army gave him a characteristic and chance as a great runner. After which he showed his ability to run and talent at the national and international level. He represented the Indian Army and then India in major events like the International Marathon, Asian Games and Olympics.
