The central government on Tuesday approved the Ex -Craft model of the fifth generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program. This is an important step to promote India’s indigenous defense capabilities and strengthen the domestic aerospace industry.
The Ministry of Defense said that Indian companies will prepare this aircraft under the supervision of Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA). For its construction, government companies as well as private companies will also be given a chance to bid. ADA will soon release expression of interest (EOI) for this.
The announcement of giving a chance to private companies to create aircraft also led to an increase of about 6 percent in shares of defense and its associated sectors. At the same time, the Nifty India Defense Index reached 52 -week new high 8,674.05.
What is AMCA Project
- In April 2024, the Cabinet Committee (CCS) on security approved a 15,000 crore project for the design and development of the fifth generation indigenous fighter jet. This fighter jet is named ‘Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft’ (Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft – AMCA).
- It is to be built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). ADA is the nodal agency to designing the Execution and Aircraft of this program. The ADA comes under the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
- It will be larger than other fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force. It will have advanced stealth characteristics to avoid enemy radar. It would be better than or even better than other stealth fighter jets of the fifth generation used globally.
