In Kalahandi district of Odisha, 36 -year -old IAS officer Dhiman Chakma caught red handed taking 1 million bribe. On Monday, he was sent to judicial custody for 14 days by Special Judge Vigilance in Bhawanipatna. Dhiman was arrested on Sunday.

Vigilance officials said that Dhiman had demanded 20 lakhs from a businessman. He also threatened to take action against him for not giving money. The businessman reported the case to Vigilance officials.

On the basis of the complaint, the Vigilance team laid a trap on the night of June 8 and IAS officer Dhiman was arrested red handed taking 1 million bribes from his government residence in Dharamgarh in Kalahandi district. The Vigilance team also searched the IAS officer’s government quarters and its office. During this time 47 lakh rupees were recovered from the quarters.

Dhiman, originally from Tripura, is a 2021 batch IAS officer. He has passed UPSC, not one, but twice the country’s most difficult exam. After passing the UPSC exam in 2019, he joined the Odisha cadre as the Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer.

Working as collector since 2024 After training as an IFS officer, Dhiman worked as an additional Chief Conservator in Baripada, Mayurbhanj from June 2021. However, he again passed the Civil Services Examination in 2021 and was handed over the Odisha cadre as an IAS officer. After training, he was working as a sub-collector in Dharmagadh, Kalahandi in January 2024.

10 days ago, 2 crore was found from the engineer’s house in Odisha

The Vigilance team recovered cash from the Chief Engineer’s flat in Bhubaneswar and ancestral house at Angul.

In Odisha earlier on 30 May, the Vigilance Department had raided 7 locations of a Chief Engineer. During this time more than 2 crore cash was recovered from his two houses. Gold jewelry and expensive clothes worth millions of rupees were also found.

On seeing the Vigilance team, the Chief Engineer started throwing a bundle of 500 rupee notes from his flat window in Bhubaneswar. Officials recovered the bundle of notes. Machines had to be resorted to to count cash. The engineer was identified as Baikunth Nath Sarangi, an employee of the Odisha government. He works in the Rural Development Department of the state. He was detected to have disproportionate assets.

The Vigilance team counted the cash found on the floor during the raid.

The engineer threw out the bundles of notes from his flat window as soon as he saw the Vigilant team.

Gold has also been found from the Chief Engineer’s flat. However, its price has not been stated yet.

The Vigilance Team also counted the money with the machine to count the note.

The recovered cash has mostly bundles of ₹ 500. Some ₹ 200, ₹ 100 and ₹ 50 bundles are also included.

1-1 crore cash received from flat and ancestral housing The official statement said that the Anti Corruption Wing of Odisha Police raided the locations of the Chief Engineer in Bhubaneswar, Angul and Puri. Around Rs 1 crore cash was recovered from his flat in Bhubaneswar, while Rs 1.1 crore was received from the ancestral residence in Angul.

Baikunth Nath Sarangi is accused of possessing disproportionate assets. In Angul, a special judge of Vigilance issued a search warrant against him, on the basis of which raids are being conducted simultaneously. Vigilance discovered 7 locations including a two -storey house in Kardagadia in Angul, a flat in Bhubaneswar and Pipili in Puri district.

After this, a team of 26 police officers raided all 7 locations simultaneously. The team consisted of eight DSP, 12 inspectors and six assistant sub -inspectors. Apart from the ancestral house of Sarangi in Angul, the houses of relatives were also searched.
