New Delhi. Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan’s film Hum Tum was released in the year 2004. In this, Rani Mukherjee was also in the lead role. The film proved to be a big hit at the box office. Saif Ali Khan was going through a major change in his career in the 2000s. He had to prove that he can make any film successful on his own and all this could be done due to ‘Hum Tum’.
Saif Ali Khan’s film was made under the direction of Kunal Kohli. ‘Hum Tum’ changed the image of Saif as a leading star, but before he got this opportunity, ‘Hum Tum’ film Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Vivek Oberoi were offered. Kunal Kohli revealed that all of them had rejected the film for some reason. He also told that Hrithik Roshan was the first choice for ‘Hum Tum’.
Hrithik Roshan was the first choice
In a conversation with Radio Nasha, Kunal Kohli said that he had first contacted Hrithik Roshan as he had earlier worked with him in ‘Mujhe Dosti Karge’, which was produced by Yash Raj Films. The film also featured Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor. Kunal told that Hrithik had liked the script very much, but he was not feeling confident himself to do it, because at that time many of his films were flopped.
Then why was the film turned down
At that time, Hrithik was seen in films like ‘Aap Mein Lagge’, ‘Na Tum Jaano Na Hum’, ‘Maine Dosti Karge’ and ‘Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon’ and someone was found, perhaps it was not released till then. Kunal recalled that Hrithik had told him that ‘some of my films are coming, which I know that there will be flops, then I am going through a bad phase.’
Aamir Khan refused to read script
He told that Hrithik wanted a hit film before doing this film and he asked Kunal whether he could wait for him for 1-2 years. After this the script went to Aamir Khan, but he did not even read it, because at that time he was going through a divorce from his first wife Reena Dutta. Kunal said, ‘Aamir Khan was divorcing from Reena, so he said that man, I am not in such a mental state that I can even hear the script, so I will not even hear it.’
Vivek Oberoi wanted a change in script
After this the script reached Vivek Oberoi. At that time, Vivek was on the verge of superstardam. He made a strong debut with Ram Gopal Varma’s company and also gave a commercial hit like Saathiya. Kunal told, ‘Initially he gave us dates, then canceled them. Then he said that some changes should be made in the script, then something else happened, then we thought now let it be.
Saif Ali Khan became hero in the film
After this, Aditya Chopra, head of Yash Raj Films, conveyed Saif Ali Khan’s name for the lead role in this film. Kunal said, ‘I immediately visited him in every scene of the film (Saif Ali Khan) and I felt that he would look great in it. Saif did not do a hit film with a solo hero till that time. But Adi (Aditya Chopra) said, ‘I am confident.’ Kunal told that when Hrithik Roshan came on the trial show of the film, he also admitted that Saif was the perfect choice for this character.
