The Ministry of Road Transport (MORTH) on Friday called the news of the closure of Fastag from 1 May 2025 a rumor. The ministry said that these reports are rumors and Fastag will remain an official method of toll collection in the country right now.

Earlier, it was revealed to close Fastag from May 1 and implement the satellite toll system. On this, the Ministry said that the National Highway Authority (NHAI) has not taken any such decision. Instead of the satellite toll system, the government is testing a new barrier-less toll system.

It will mix the automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras and fastag without stopping the toll of vehicles, which will save traffic jams and time.

Automatic number plate recognition system ongoing trial

The government is testing the toll system without a barrier by mixing ANPR (automatic number plate identification system) and fastag on some selected toll plazas in the country.

In this system, the drivers will not have to stay at the toll plaza. The number plate of the high-government camera vehicle will scan and the money will be deducted from Fastag.

After feedback, new system will be implemented in the whole country

NHAI has removed tenders for the Anpr-Fastag system. After the trial, the government will implement it across the country only on the basis of feedback and system performance of the system.

What is a fastag?

Fastag is a type of tag or sticker. It is attached to the windscreen of the vehicle. Fastag works on radio frequency identification or RFID technology. Through this technique, the cameras on the toll plaza scan the bar-cod of stickers and the toll fees are cut off from the wallet of the fastag.

The use of fastag does not have to stop for payment of toll tax. It is used to decrease the time taken on the toll plaza and to make the journey accessible.

Bank and online platform can buy fastag

You can buy a fastag from any toll plaza in the country. Apart from this, you can also buy it from Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, SBI, Kotak Bank branch. You can also buy it from online platforms like Paytm, Amazon, Google Pay. You can also make payment by linking the fastag account to this app.

If you want, you can link your bank account to this app. Whenever you pass through a toll plaza, the toll tax will be deducted from your account. While buying a fastag, you must have ID proof and vehicle registration document.
