New Delhi: There was a lot of anger among the people about the content of shows like ‘India Got Latent’ and ‘House Arrest’. Cases were registered against the show makers and their contestants. They were banned. Now a petition was filed to ban pornographic content of social media-OTT, then the Supreme Court refused to hear it.
The Supreme Court asked the petitioner that if there are some additional facts in this petition, then keep this demand in the old petition filed on this issue. The Supreme Court has already sought answers from the Central Government on a petition filed on this case. The new petition has demanded that the court set up the National Control Control Authority which sets guidelines to prevent vulgarity on these platforms.
The name of OTT platform was issued notice
On April 28, the Supreme Court had issued a notice to the central government and companies in the case of banning the broadcast of pornographic content on OTT and social media platforms. The platforms to whom the court has issued notice includes Netflix, Amazon, Owl Digital Limited, Alt Balaji, Twitter, Meta Platform and Google. Former Information Commissioner Uday Mahurkar, including others, had demanded in the petition filed that the court should direct the Central Government to constitute the National Constant Control Authority, which should set guidelines to prevent vulgarity on these platforms.
Supreme Court expressed concern
Hearing the petition, Justice BR A bench of Gawai and Justice Augustine George Christ said that it creates a serious concern. The center should do something about this. This case comes under the jurisdiction of the executive or legislature. We are also accused of interfering in the jurisdiction of the executive. Still we are issuing notice.
Request to take action on disputed profiles
The petition claimed that there are many pages and profile active on social media platforms which are showing pornographic content without any control. Apart from this, many OTT platforms also have such content, in which even more objectionable content is found. The petition said that this promotes the distorted mentality and behavior, which is also increasing the crime.
