Former CJI Sanjeev Khanna had asked Justice Yashwant Verma to resign on the basis of inhouse report. On Justice Verma’s refusal, CJI Khanna wrote a letter to the President and the Prime Minister recommended the removal of Justice Verma. News agency ANI has given this information quoted by sources.
Earlier, ANI had said that the central government could bring a proposal in the monsoon session of Parliament to remove Justice Verma from the post. Justice Verma’s government house in Lutyens Delhi caught fire on 14 March. When the fire service team went to extinguish the fire, they received a half-up notes of 500-500 rupees filled in sacks.
Experts in the process of removing the judge of the Supreme Court and the High Court, officials said that Justice Yashwant Verma has the option of resignation only. If they resign, they will get pension and other benefits like a retired judge. If Justice Verma is removed by bringing a proposal in Parliament, there will be no benefits.

According to Article 217 of the Constitution, the judge of the High Court can resign the President. There is no approval for the resignation of the judge. A simple resignation is enough. The judges can also write the date for leaving the post in their letter. In this case, he can withdraw resignation before the last date for holding the post.

After the news of getting a half -edged note came out, CJI Sanjeev Khanna of the time made an inhouse panel on 22 March to investigate the case. The panel submitted its report to CJI on 4 May. In this, Justice Verma was convicted.
The panel concluded this based on electronic evidence, witnesses and investigation. The panel recorded statements of more than 50 people. Among them were Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora and head of fire service. Both officers were first among those who reached the spot after the fire.
It was also said in the report that the cash was removed from the store room after the fire at around 11:35 pm on March 14, 2025. Based on the report, CJI recommended the removal of Justice Verma from the post under the ‘In-House Procedure’.
The panel included Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, Himachal High Court Chief Justice GS Sandhwalia and Judge Anu Shivraman, Judge of Karnataka High Court.

However, the investigation slowed down. In February 2024, a court ordered the CBI to resume the closed investigation, but the Supreme Court overturned the order and the CBI stopped the investigation.
