The path of release of actor Kamal Haasan’s film ‘Thug Life’ in Karnataka has now been cleared. During the hearing in the Supreme Court on Thursday, the court gave necessary orders regarding the film. The court told the state government that if there is any violence due to the film, strict action should be taken against it under criminal and civil law.
According to the report of Live Law, the Supreme Court, after hearing the state government and other parties, the court closed the case. The Karnataka government assured that there would be no restriction on the release of the film and the theaters would be given full security.
Please tell that Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan and Justice Manmohan’s bench were hearing a public interest litigation filed by Mahesh Reddy. The petition sought instructions to allow the screening of Kamal Haasan’s film ‘Thug Life’ to be screened in Karnataka.
The Supreme Court also said that the issue of hurting people’s sentiments in the country is now becoming the cause of mob violence and threats against freedom of expression in films, books and plays.
The Supreme Court asked- Why objection to drama, poetry, cinema? According to The Hindu report, Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan and Manmohan’s vacation bench said that it is the responsibility of the state to take strict action against such crowds or groups that threaten others. Justice Bhuiyan said, “Freedom of expression in films should not live in fear of violence.”
Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on 14 July 2023.
Justice Bhuiyan asked, “This series of hurting emotions … There is no end to it. It is hurt by someone who sees or listens, and then sabotage starts … Today the film is objected to, tomorrow someone will say that there cannot be a drama … Where are we going?”
Justice Manmohan also agreed and said, “Should everything be stopped? Film, drama, poetry is nothing?”
Justice Manmohan was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India on 5 December 2024.
At the same time, the police has issued a notice to Kannada worker Praveen Shetty. The state government made it clear that they did not impose any ban on the film. The producers themselves decided to stop the release as there was a dispute with the Karnataka film Chamber of Commerce.
Supreme Court said- do not take law in hand Another party said that Kamal Haasan’s comment was made only for promotion. On this, Justice Bhuiyan asked, “If it was just a promotion, you got stuck in it?” Justice Manmohan said, “If you think it was a publicity stunt, you should take legal action, do not take the law in hand.”
Another petitioner Mahesh Reddy, who was represented by lawyer Athenum Valna, demanded the court that guidelines should be issued on such unofficial sanctions.
Valon said that the threats of arson and violence given to the film theaters are very dangerous and this is a direct attack on freedom of expression. He also demanded the court to impose fine in such cases.
At the same time, on behalf of the producer of the film, lawyer Satish Parasaran said that the reply given by the state government is satisfactory and they want to withdraw the case.
Let me tell you that earlier the Supreme Court had expressed strong displeasure over the release of the film ‘Thug Life’ in Karnataka. The court had said that no one can be prevented from watching the film by pointing a gun on the heads of the people.
The bench of Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan and Justice Manmohan told the Karnataka government that when a film has received a certificate from the censor board, it should be shown in every state of the country. The court gave the state government a day’s time to clear the situation on the release of the film.
Actually, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) demanded that the film will not be released until Haasan apologizes. After which the Supreme Court had sought a response from the state government on this issue and transferred the matter to the High Court. After which the next hearing of the case was held on Thursday i.e. June 19.
