Highlights
- The new wave of Kovid-19 has emerged in Asian countries.
- 2 Kovid positive patients have died in Mumbai.
- JN.1 and LF7 variants have increased infection.
Jis Korona forced the entire world to remain locked in homes, the same Kovid-19 has returned once again. A new wave of Kovid-19 has emerged in Asian countries such as China, Singapur, Hong Kong and Thailand. Due to this spreading effect of Corona, concern has increased around the world. It has so far received the most cases in Singapur. At the same time, 2 patients have died in KEM Hospital in Mumbai. The famous actress Shilpa Shirodkar has also been counted. The main reason for this surge in the cases of Covid-19 is considered to be the reason for the new OMICRON suborders, such as JN.1 and its respective variant LF7.
In Singapore, in the beginning of May 2025, the number of patients suffering from this infection increased rapidly to more than 14,000. Whereas in the last week of April, this number was 11,100. The number of people hospitalized has also increased, but ICU cases have decreased slightly. Officials say the current variants are not more contagious or serious than before. The reason for this growth may be a decreasing immunity. Currently LF.7 and NB.1.8 variants are prominent, which are variants of JN.1.
What is this jn.1 strain
JN.1 is a descendant of OMICron Ba.2.86, which was identified in August 2023. In December 2023, it was cleared by WHO as a ‘variant of interest’. There are about 30 mutations in this variant which are meant to avoid immunity, which were more than other variants of that time. However, BA.2.86 did not emerge as a prevailing strain of Sars-Cov-2 at the end of 2023. The descendant of JN.1, Ba.2.86, is now able to spread more effectively due to one or two additional mutations. Whereas it maintains the characteristic of avoiding immunity like its ancestor. Johns Hopkins University says JN.1 has now developed to spread more effectively. The Kovid-19 virus in Singapore has been found in sewage water. However, this information has not yet been revealed whether this new variant is going to spread faster than before.
JN.1 Variants remained the most common Sars-Cov-2 variant during the epidemic week 12 in all four areas of WHO, with 93.9% in the Western Pacific region (WPR), 85.7% in South-East Asia Region (Sear), 94.7% in European Region (EUR) and 93.2% in America region (AMR).
Will existing Covid-19 vaccines work on JN.1 Strain?
Many studies indicate that it is difficult to neutralize the body’s immune system for JN.1 variants. Research conducted about living viruses and lab-made psyodo-virus has shown that antibodies obtained from vaccination or first infection blocks JN.1 less effectively than earlier variants. This means that JN.1 can partially avoid the existing immune defense of the body. The WHO said that XBB.1.5 monowed booster, which is specifically designed to target the XBB.1.5 subcontinent of Omicron, has been found to have effective in increasing security against JN.1 variants in many studies.
