Apart from Gaurav Gogoi, MM Abdullah (DMK), Priyanka Chaturvedi (Shiv Sena-UBT), John Britas, (CPI-M), Javed Ali Khan, (SP) and Naval Kishore (RJD) were also present at the press conference.

The coalition of opposition parties India block on Thursday demanded the cancellation of Section 44 (3) of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP). The opposition says that it destroys the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

More than 120 MPs of India Block signed a memorandum demanding to cancel this section. These include big names like Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, John Britas, TR Balu. It will be assigned to Information and Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav.

At the joint press conference of India Block leaders, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said that we will raise the issue in front of the Information Technology Minister.

The DPDP i.e. Digital Personal Data Protection Vidhan was passed on 7 August 2023 from the Lok Sabha and on 9 August 2023 in the Rajya Sabha. The Bill was approved by the President on 11 August 2023.

However, a no -confidence motion was brought against the government in the same session regarding the bill, which was rejected in the Lok Sabha on 10 August 2023.

Opposition allegations- The rights that get from RTI are snatching

In the press conference, Gaurav said- I appeal to the media to see the 2019 JPC report. Many of the provisions that have been brought in it are opposite to JPC recommendations. Even the Digital Data Protection Board has made recommendations about how the members should be appointed, such as involving the Attorney General to ensure proper hard work. But none of these have been included in the law.

Gaurav said- When the opposition was opposing the Manipur crisis, this law was made in a hurry. The government intended to end RTI. Not only RTI, many laws during the UPA government which changed the government, today the Modi government is weakening them.

Gaurav alleged that the government has taken away the Right to Information of Citizens by bringing the DPDP Act to the DPDP Act in a very secret, malicious and mischievous manner.

Why the opposition is raising the issue of RTI and DPDP Act

According to Section 8 (1) (J) of the RTI Act, if there is a information personal, and it has nothing to do with public interest or public activity, or if it violates privacy, it can be stopped. But, the Information Officer believes that if the information is in public interest, then that information should be given.

Section 44 (3) of the DPDP Act has replaced Section 8 (1) (J) of this RTI. If any information is personal after the change, it cannot be shared under any circumstances, whether it is in public interest or not.
