Congress held 5 sessions in Gujarat

A look at Congress’s election journey in Gujarat The Congress’s election journey in Gujarat is a long and ups and downs. Since independence, till now the Congress has made a strong hold in Gujarat, sometimes it had to be out of power.
- Post-independence round (1960–1990) After the formation of Gujarat in 1960, the Congress created its strong position in the state. The Congress won the 1962, 1967 and 1972 assembly elections. During this, Gandhian leaders like Jivraj Mehta, Balwantrai Mehta and Hitendra Desai led the party.
- Madhav Singh Solanki Yuga In 1980 and 1985, the Congress performed brilliantly under the leadership of Madhav Singh Solanki. In 1985, the Congress won 149 seats and set a record, which was the biggest win of any party in the Gujarat assembly elections. Solanki’s ‘Kham’ (Kshatriya, Harijan, Adivasi, Muslim) strategy strengthened the party on the basis of social alliance.
- BJP’s entry in 1995 From 1962 to 1984, the Congress captured most of the Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat. After the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984, the Congress won all 26 seats in the sympathy wave. In the 1990s, the BJP started setting foot in Gujarat with the Hindutva and Ram temple movement. In 1995, the BJP won the assembly elections for the first time and the Congress was out of power.
- Congress away from power from 7 elections After the 2002 riots, the BJP led by Narendra Modi made Gujarat its stronghold. The vote share of the Congress continued to decrease. In 2002, the Congress got 51 seats, which was less than 53 in 1998. In 2007, Congress got 59 seats. In 2012 too, the Congress was reduced to 61 seats. In 2017, the Congress led by Rahul Gandhi performed better and won 77 seats, but stayed away from power. In 2022, due to the emergence of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Congress vote was distributed and it was reduced to only 17 seats.
- 1 Lok Sabha seat won after 24 years In 2004, the Congress won 12 seats in Gujarat, but in 2009 the number increased to 11. In 2014 and 2019, the BJP won all 26 seats and brought the Congress to zero. In 2024, the Congress won the Banaskantha seat and opened the account after 10 years, but overall its performance was weak.
