In the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, the election of the Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be held, not a secret voting, but by raising hands (show of hands). Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria has approved this change.

,

He has cleared the amendment to Rule 6 of “Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (Functions and Operations) Regulations, 1996”. Now the election process will be completely public and transparent.

Administrator Kataria said that this would make the selection process transparent, accountable and reliable towards democratic system. The role of councilors will also be clear now.

Congress and Aam Aadmi Party had long demand

Congress and Aam Aadmi Party councilors had been demanding this change for a long time. Councilors of both parties had met the administrator several times and also requested in writing that the secret polling system should be abolished, as it raises questions on transparency.

Let me tell you that there was a lot of controversy over secret voting in the mayor elections held in January this year. The Aam Aadmi Party had accused the BJP of rigging the election process and canceling the votes of the councilors. The matter reached the High Court and became a topic of discussion across the country.

Ever since this dispute, the opposition parties were constantly demanding that the mayor election be held through voting instead of secret voting, so that the electoral process should be transparent and no manipulation of any kind.
