- Assam meghalaya to install border pillars in 5 disputed areas before 15 aug

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma held a meeting in Guwahati.
Both states have taken an important step towards resolving the long -running border dispute between Assam and Meghalaya.
The governments of both the states announced on Monday that by August 15 i.e. Independence Day, border pillars will be installed in five disputed areas. This information was given by the Chief Ministers of both the states.
These five areas are included in the six disputed areas of which Assam and Meghalaya signed an agreement in March 2022 to resolve 12 disputed areas.

Deputy Commissioner will hold a meeting to resolve the dispute of sixth area
In Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma addressed a joint press conference.
Himanta Bisw Sarma said, ‘Of the six areas that had reached the agreement, five will try to install border pillars by August 15. There is some disagreement about one of these areas.
He said that Meghalaya wants a village that has come in our part, but he has assured that we will be given the same land instead. We have sought a week’s time so that we can consider it and answer them.
Regarding the sixth area, Sarma said that this is the Peelingakata area and there is a difference of opinion about the interpretation of the dispute. To resolve this, the deputy commissioners of both states will hold a meeting among themselves.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said, ,Small issues are being resolved and border pillars are expected to be installed in five areas till Independence Day. The correct solution to border dispute is an important achievement in our relationships.
Discussion on the remaining six areas will continue
Sarma also informed that negotiations on the remaining six disputed areas will go ahead, but no time limit has been fixed for this.

Consent on Kulasi Project
Regarding the Kulasi multipurpose project associated with the border, both Chief Ministers said that it has been decided to work jointly. Sangma said that the Kuli project is beneficial for both states. We will work together, but the consent of the local people will be necessary. “
At the same time, Himanta Bisw Sarma said that both states will work together on this hydel project, while the Assam government will carry forward its irrigation part, which will benefit Kamrup and Golpada districts.
What is border dispute between Assam and Meghalaya
There is a border dispute between Assam and Meghalaya at 12 places on the 884.9 km long interstate border. In March 2022, 6 disputed areas were resolved in the first phase under the agreement in New Delhi in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The first phase was decided on an area of 36.79 square kilometers, out of which 18.46 square kilometers were received to Assam and 18.33 sq km Meghalaya.
Meghalaya was made a separate state from Assam in 1972 and since then it has been challenging the Assam Reorganization Act, 1971, which Assam considers the legal basis of its border.
The Mizo Peace Accord was signed by Mizoram leaders on 30 June 1986. The limit has been fixed in this itself. But in Rule 1875, there is a dispute between Assam and Mizoram on 1933, on 1933. Mizoram says that the rules of 1875 be followed.
