New Delhi. Apple’s iPhone 17 series has become available for sale officially in India and on the very first day people are seeing tremendous enthusiasm. In Mumbai, hundreds of Apple fans, are waiting for their phone in long queues. Even before the sun rises, on Friday 19 September, the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) flocks to the company’s store. A similar view was seen at Saket Store in Delhi, where eager customers were standing in line to get new devices.

But this year, India has a big reason for being happy. For the first time, the latest iPhone 17 series, including high-end Pro models, will be assembled here from the first day.

India’s role in Apple’s global strategy has increased rapidly. Tim Cook has already revealed that about half of iPhones sold in America are now made in India. And this year, for the first time, iPhones made in India are being sent worldwide from day one, which is breaking the old pattern of living behind Chinese production.
In this article, we will closely look at Apple’s “Made in India” effort, increasing demand for iPhones in the country, and will closely look at the major features of the iPhone 17 lineup.

Apple’s ‘Made in India’ campaign for iPhone 17
Apple has focused on India for the production of the iPhone 17 series. According to NDTV, the company has spread the production to five local factories. The iPhone 17 series is divided among various partners. The iPhone 17 Pro is being assembled in Pegatron Plants run by FoxConn and Tata, while the base iPhone 17 model is being prepared in the new Hosur unit of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu at the Wistron Factory in Tata, Moneycontrol.

Foxconn’s Sriperumbudur plant is producing the thinnest handset, iPhone Air, in Tamil Nadu. At the same time, Foxconn has started shipping the iPhone 17 units from its new $ 2.8 billion factory in Devanhali near Bangalore. This site is now running with the Chennai unit and has become India’s largest iPhone factory in terms of production capacity.

Sources told Moneycontrol that most of this production is to meet strong demand in the US and Europe, as well as serving India’s fast growing premium phone market. The Test runs of the iPhone 17 at the Devanhalli plant started in April and since then the production has increased.

In the financial year ending in March, Apple assembled iphones worth about $ 22 billion in India, which is a 60 percent increase compared to the previous year. This happened when US President Donald Trump pressurized the tech company to limit the Indian appearance.

According to Moneycontrol by Moneycontrol, Tata, which has become increasingly one of Apple’s most important partners, is expected to handle almost half the iPhone production in India over the next two years. These factories are not focused only on the iPhone 17 series. They are also producing earlier models like iPhone 14, iPhone 15 and iPhone 16.

The craze of iPhones is increasing in India

Apple’s bet on India is proving right. The country has become one of Apple’s fastest growing markets and analysts believe that this change is helping India establish as a serious global manufacturing center.

The landscape of demand is very big. According to S&P Global, only iPhone sales in the US are expected to reach about 76 million units in 2024. To maintain this speed, Apple may have to double the shipment from India or draw devices from other markets to meet the demand of American buyers.

But it is not only about exports. The presence of Apple in India’s own smartphone market is getting stronger every quarter. In the first half of 2025, the shipment rose by 21.5 percent to 5.9 million units, with the iPhone 16 as the country’s most shipped model. In the June quarter, Apple’s shipment in India increased by about 20 percent from year to year, causing its market share to 7.5 percent.

Despite high prices, the demand is not decreasing. The iPhone 17 series is expensive than the iPhone 16 lineup, but analysts do not think that it will affect the sale.

Tarun Pathak, the research director of the Counterpoint Research, told Moneycontrol that about 60-65 percent iPhone in India is sold on EMI, so any price hike can be easily adjusted. If you add bank offers and trade-ins, then the carrying capacity increases even more. Price increase will not prevent users from upgrading.

Among the new models, the iPhone Air is the most discussed. Apple has made the thinnest model ever, which is already attracting a special buyer class. There are design lovers who will buy it, but the cameras who want will consider only pro models. The iPhone Air is different from any earlier iPhone, and this will be its USP.
