New Delhi. This week, the Indian government has warned WhatsApp desktop users about a major security threat. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-in) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued a warning of ‘high-salary’ for those WhatsApp users on 9 April, who have installed the desktop app on their PC.

The government has found some security flaws in WhatsApp, taking advantage of which hackers can steal your personal data. Due to these flaws, your account can also be hacked. The government has advised users to update their Whatsapp immediately. These flaws have been fixed in the new update. Apart from this, users have been advised to avoid clicking on any suspicious link. If an unknown person sends a message to you, then ignore it and block it immediately.

Whatsapp Safety Problem: Should you worry?
The biggest conclusion of this safety alert is that if hackers succeed in taking advantage of weaknesses, then WhatsApp users may have to face spruit attacks. The CERT-in note states, “This weakness is caused by wrong configuration between mime type and file extension, causing disturbances in opening attachment. An attacker can take advantage of this weakness and create dangerous attachments, which can run arbitrary code when opening manually in WhatsApp.

This safety risk is primarily associated with users who use the WhatsApp Desktop app on Windows PC. The agency says that the versions before 2.2450.6 of WhatsApp desktop for Windows are sensitive to these spoof attacks. To avoid this, update your WhatsApp immediately.
