Many times when the hero used to go to a hotel or club to meet Villain, such dance scenes were still shown. In these dance scenes, many actresses were taken only for an item song or glamorous look. Many actresses like Jayamalini, Silk Smita, Disco Shanti were famous for this reason.
However, many of these actresses were lost in oblivion after some time. But Jyotilakshmi was one of the few names that did not limit herself to glamor, but made her own identity. Jyotilakshmi, who came from Thanjavur, made her debut in Tamil films with MGR’s film ‘Peria Idathup Pen’. His song “Kattode Kuzhalda Ada” of this film was a big hit at that time.
Jyotilakshmi wanted to become a heroine, but she got only dance scenes in the beginning. He was very fond of dance, he also openly adopted these occasions. Gradually, he also started getting villain and assistant characters. He played the role of Jayalalithaa’s friend in the film ‘Adimapane’ and then also played Villain in director Ramnarayan’s films.
He got a chance to work several times in MGR films. Due to this, he also became a good fan following. She was also very popular in Telugu films in the 70-80s. In Tamil, he worked in more than 300 films, including more than 100 and in other languages of South.
Jyotilakshmi shared the screen with MGR, NTR and Jayalalithaa-the three politicians and actors. She stayed away from cinema for some time, but then returned from the song ‘Kana Karunguile’ from the film ‘Setu’ which became very popular. He later also worked in TV serials. He was the last role in the serial ‘Valli’.
Jyotilakshmi’s last day was sad. His health suddenly deteriorated in 2016. She was doing household chores till she was taken to the hospital.
Investigations there revealed that they had blood cancer (leukemia). Despite treatment, he died in the next 20 days.
Jyotilakshmi’s career may have started with glamor, but with her hard work she had made a special place in the heart of the audience.
