Colonel Manpreet Singh was posted in the Indian Army’s Sikh Light Infantry, 19 Rashtriya Rifles and was a resident of Amritsar district of Punjab. Currently, his family is situated in New Chandigarh and a Shaheedi Samagam is organized every year on his anniversary.
His sacrifice day was 13 September 2023. The day was recorded as an example of courage and dedication in Indian military history. Colonel Manpreet Singh was leading a special “search and distroi operation” in the dense hills of Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir.
The operation was carried out to neutralize terrorist activities and restore peace in the area. He was accompanied by Himayun Muzammil Bhat, Deputy Superintendent of Police of Jammu and Kashmir Police, who laid down his life for the country in this operation.

1. Martyrdom (13 September 2023) introducing valor: Colonel Manpreet Singh led a highly risky “search and disturbing operation” against terrorists in the inaccessible hills of Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. As soon as the presence of the terrorists was confirmed, he immediately planned a siege and took the front. Through the narrow footpaths, amidst a bullet shower, he fired directly on the terrorists and killed an enemy on the spot. Even when he was shot on his head in this encounter, he did not lose courage and continued to fight with enemies till his last breath. This sacrifice became a symbol of the glorious tradition of the Indian Army.
2. Another martyr on duty – DSP Himayun Bhat: Colonel Manpreet Singh along with Jammu and Kashmir Police Deputy Superintendent of Police Himayun Muzammil Bhat was also involved in this brave operation. He also stayed on the front and attained Veeragati while performing his duties. It was an example of coordination and supreme sacrifice between the two security forces, which showed the country that the sons of India are ready to fight every threat.
3. Finally rites- Bette’s final salute, said- Papa, Jai Hind When the body of Colonel Manpreet Singh reached his ancestral village Bhadaujian (New Chandigarh), every eye became moist. He was cremated with full military honors. The most emotional moment came when his son Kabir, wearing a soldier’s uniform, offered fire to his martyred father. Kabir, while giving the last salute to his father, just said – “Papa, Jai Hind.” This scene touched the heart of the entire country and moistened the eyes of millions of Indians.
4. Tributes of the public and governor: In the last visit of the martyr Colonel, so much public gathered that it took 20 minutes to cover a distance of 200 meters from home to crematorium. People stood on every street and roof to give a final farewell to their hero. Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit himself came to pay tribute and described the sacrifice of the martyr Colonel as invaluable to the country. This scene was not only tragic, but was a tribute to a true hero, which would always be recorded in history.

According to the information, Colonel Manpreet Singh was originally a resident of Bharonjian village in Punjab, which is near Chandigarh. His family lives in Chandigarh. His martyrdom has shocked his wife Jagmeet Grewal and two children. He has a son of 8 years, while 4 years old.
Shaheed Manpreet Singh was admitted to the post of Lieutenant in 2003. He became a colonel in 2020. His father started working as a security personnel at Punjab University after his retirement. He died during the job. Therefore, Sandeep Singh, younger brother of martyr Manpreet Singh, was admitted to non -teaching staff. He currently works at Punjab University.
