Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has formed a high level committee on Tuesday to improve relations with the central government. This committee will be chaired by retired Chief Justice Kurian Joseph of the Supreme Court.
This committee has also been tasked to recommend the subjects to bring them into the state list again, which the state government earlier looked at, but now it is under both the central and state government.
The committee will also include former officers Ashok Shetty and MU Nagarajan. The interim report of this committee is to be presented by January 2026 and the final report by 2028. Chief Minister Stalin said in the assembly that its purpose is to protect the rights of all states including Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu government demanded exemption from NEET
This decision has come at a time when there is a conflict between the state government and the central government over issues like education. Especially about NEET exam.
The Tamil Nadu government demanded exemption from NEET. In fact, the Tamil Nadu government had sought permission to use 12th marks instead of NEET to take admission in Medical (MBBS). Which was rejected by President Draupadi Murmu.
Stalin had said – even though the central government has rejected our demand, our fight is not over yet. We will consult legal experts to challenge this decision.
Apart from this, Governor R.N. There has also been a long -standing conflict between Ravi and the state government. Recently, the Supreme Court reprimanded Governor Ravi and said that he kept the 10 Bills passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly for a long time without authority. The court called it “arbitrary” and “illegal”.
These bills also included changes in the rules related to the appointment of State University Vice Chancellors. After this, the Supreme Court reduced the Governor’s power and reduced the time limit of deciding on the bill sent by the Legislative Assembly.
Demand to bring education in state list
Education in Tamil Nadu is currently in the concurrent list, that is, both the Center and the state run it together. Chief Minister Stalin has demanded that education be handed over to the state government by reversing the 42nd amendment of the Constitution. Recently, NCERT changed the name of the books to Hindi names, the Tamil Nadu government has opposed it.
Controversy over TRAI language formula
The controversy between the state government and the central government over the TRAI Language formula of National Education Policy has also deepened. Under NEP 2020, students must learn three languages, but no language has been made mandatory. States and schools have the freedom to decide which three languages they want to teach. There is no provision for the imperative of any language. It has been recommended to study in primary classes (class 1 to 5) in mother tongue or local language.
DMK opposed this, saying that the current two-language policy of Tamil Nadu is enough, and the state is already ahead in the field of education. The party accused the Central Government, especially Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan of threatening to stop the education fund of Rs 2,500 crore to the state. The BJP had rejected these allegations and said that Hindi has not been made mandatory in the policy, and DMK itself had said to implement this policy itself.
Conflict intensifies before elections
The dispute between DMK and BJP has intensified even before the Lok Sabha elections. Another issue in this is also the upcoming delimitation practice, which fears Tamil Nadu that its seats may decrease in Parliament. In view of the elections, BJP has re -aligned with AIADMK.
