Bob Simpson, one of the most influential people of Australian cricket, died on Saturday. He was 89 years old. ICC Cherman Jai Shah (Jay Shah) praised Simpson’s contribution in a statement and said he would be remembered for a long time. Shah said, ‘Bob Simpson was one of the great players of the game and was very sad to hear the news of his death. His legacy is very large. As a player, captain and later a coach, he shaped Australian cricket and inspired the global game. He guided a generation of players who later became legends and their influence was far beyond the field.
Jai Shah said, ‘On behalf of the International Cricket Council, I express my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the entire cricket world. His death is a major loss to the game, but his contribution will always be remembered and cherished. ICC ‘Hall of Famer’ Simpson played 62 Test matches for Australia between 1957 and 1978, scoring 4,869 runs at an average of 46.81. This includes 10 centuries, 27 half -centuries and the highest score of 311.
Captain made at the age of 41 years
In 1977, Bob Simpson returned from retirement. Simspson, who returned after breaking retirement, became the captain of Australia. He captained Australia at the age of 41, after which he captained his team in the series against India and West Indies. Australia won the Test series 3–2 against India. After this victory, Simpson again said goodbye to cricket. He played the biggest innings of his career in 1964. He batting for about 13 hours to score 311 runs. He, along with Bill Lauri, shared a record of 382 runs for the first wicket.
