Gulveer Singh of India broke his national record in the 3000 meter race in Budapest and finished fifth. Kipasang Matthew of Kenya won the gold medal.

New Delhi: Gulveer Singh of India improved his own national record in the men’s 3000 meter race non -Olympic event in the Gulai Istwan Memorial Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix in Budapest and finished fifth.

Gulveer took a time of seven minutes 34.49 seconds on Tuesday in February this year in his own last national record 7.38.26 seconds in Boston University David Hemri Valentine Invitation Competition.

This 27 -year -old player was participating in his first track race in Europe. This is a world athletics contental tour gold level competition.

Kipasang Matthew Kipchumba of Kenya won the gold medal with a time of 7: 33.23. Eduardo Heera (7: 33.58) of Mexico, Oscar Chelimo (7: 33.93) of Uganda and Valentin Soka (7: 34.28) of Uruguay finished second, third and fourth respectively.

Gulveer has also set a national record in men’s 5000 meters (12: 59.77) and 10,000 meters (27: 00.22). He is also the current Asian champion in the 5000 meter and 10,000 meter races. He won a gold medal at the continental championship in May.

He has already qualified for the men’s 5000 meter race in the World Athletics Championship to be held in Tokyo from 13 to 21 September.
