In the last 11 years, the government has converted 55,000 km state highway to NH.

The central government is now going to reduce the speed of converting the State Highway to the National Highway (NH). According to media reports, now every road will not get the status of NH, but the state governments will be given money to improve their highways themselves.

Under the new model, the state governments will look after these roads after the upgrade. The central government will now focus on building a Greenfield highway and expressway.

According to reports, PM Modi has recently asked the Ministry of Transport to make a model by the end of July, which reduces the need to declare the state highway NH. The ministry has been asked to connect the State Highway and Small Ports.

Government will focus on building Greenfield Highway and Expressway

In the last 11 years, the government changed the 55,000 km state highway to NH, which has now increased the total length of the National Highway to 1.46 lakh km.

The government believes that instead of spreading the network, it is more important to widen and improve the existing highway. By March 2025, the total road network in India has been more than 63 lakh km in length.

Currently, the central government maintains the roads from the state to the national highway.

States can get more funds

In the new plan, states can get a lump sum fund from the center to improve their highway. With this, they are improved to the roads according to their needs.

After the upgrade, the state governments will also do the care and maintenance of these roads, so that the central government will be able to focus on building roads for long distance travel.

Earlier state governments used to send NH’s proposal

Earlier, the state governments used to send proposals to the Center to convert their important roads to NH. The central government used to investigate these roads on the basis of national importance, traffic and connectivity and declared them NH. After this, the maintenance and funding of these roads was responsible for the central government.
